Deaf Education

Deaf Education at Divyang Development Society is designed categorically to meet the educational, social, linguistic, cultural and cognitive needs of deaf and hard of hearing students.
In India the right to an appropriate free public education still remains unrealized by many children who are deaf or hard of hearing. These children have equal rights for a quality education with the same course content and
at the same academic level as that of hearing children, to help them achieve equality in opportunities. However, there are different communication methods and approaches for educating deaf or hard of hearing students across the globe. The main communication methods used in Divyang Development Society are:
Total Communication (TC) is an approach to Deaf education that aims at making use of a number of communicating modes such as signed, oral, auditory, written and visual aids, depending on the specific needs and abilities of the child.
Oral – Auditory Education is an approach that emphasizes on auditory training, lip-reading and articulation ability, by assuming that all information can be transmitted by using verbal / spoken language. In this approach, use of sign language is excluded.
Indian Sign Language – A precious gift of God given to human beings is their ability to express themselves by communicating with each other. A normal human being expresses himself by speaking out or reacting to a situation, while a deaf or hard of hearing person who is unable to speak, faces many problems while communicating with others. To help them sign language comes into existence. Indian Sign Language is a visual-gesture language used by deaf and hard of hearing people as their mode of communication.
